Her Winning Contest Entry:
Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey in the early 80’s it
wasn’t until my late teen years when I came across Vixen while
searching for some of the 80’s greatest bands.
It was love at first
sound! I was immediately hooked when I heard the intro to “Edge of a
Broken Heart”. However, it wasn’t exactly the catchy tunes and the
notorious big hair that was the attraction for me. Eventually, I
realized Vixen to me, was much more special than your average 80’s
metal band. Thanks to the internet, the more I researched the band,
the more I learned and the more I got into it.
As Jan Kuehnemund’s
baby, Vixen was the perfect band of 4 women who had the balls to rock
hard in a man’s world. It was as much the attitude as their
incredible musicianship, combined with their exceptional stage
presence. Vixen was definitely one of the rare bands, if not the
rarest, that somehow made life so much easier. From then on my life-
long passion began.
Soon I started to collect Vixen merchandise and
memorabilia. I may not have the world’s most extensive Vixen
collection, but what started out as a hobby turned out to be a little
more than just a few records. My teen years may be long gone but I
still have a Vixen “shrine” – as some of my friends would like to call
it- in my bedroom and in the office area of the house. The most
amazing thing is that my husband actually puts up with it and even
pays for some of the merchandise I continue to buy and collect to
this day! (Please see part of my collection here.)
Because of my age and
location at the time, I was never able to see Vixen in their heyday.
It wasn’t until I got married and moved to the U.S., which was just
around the time when Vixen was reformed and started touring again
that I got to see them live. (Of course, there was actually a gig
before that when I was still in Istanbul and I literally begged my
future husband to go just so he could tell me all about it, hopefully
get a few autographs and say hi to Jan for me who was somehow vaguely
aware of her crazy little fan from overseas whom she had heard of
through someone I had corresponded with on the internet.) I remember
changing my flight and arriving a few days earlier so we could make a
6 hour drive up to Missouri to see Vixen the next day – mind you after
about a 14 hour flight the day before. I was so excited, nervous and
tired that I actually got drunk on my ass by the time they finished
their set and started mingling in with the fans. Still, I met the
band and had a photo taken, which is of course, one of my prize
possessions.
The following year, I got into my husband’s head and we somehow
decided that everyone has the right to get Vixenized! Therefore,
Vixen should come play in our town so all of our friends and a lot of
other fans could truly experience this amazing band. So, as crazy as
this may sound when I go back and think about it, we did book the
band and promoted the show – the whole nine yards!. It was definitely
an experience beyond words and everyone who attended the show that
night was totally blown away by the entire band, which of course made
me the happiest person since I absolutely love sharing Vixen’s music
with others. As a matter of fact, the clip of “You Wish” uploaded by
BuzzChic at www.houseofhaironline.com is from that show and it was taken
by me. So, thank you for featuring it!
During one of our
conversations with the band, I was once referred to by Jenna as the
biggest female Vixen fan. I have certainly made quite a few friends
through Vixen and their music, and I know for a fact that every one
of them is very special and have the same kind of passion for the
band that I do. Whether or not one of my crazy antics could qualify
me as the ultimate Vixen fan is a question you have to answer.
However, to me, being a “Vixenite”, whose numbers are growing every
single day, is also something special. So, watch out Kiss Army!
Vixenites might just one day, take over!
