Congrats to all the winners in the House of Hair’s big Metallica giveaway! Everyone scored the band’s new CD, Death Magnetic, as well as a copy of the book “Metallica and Philosophy: A Crash Course in Brain Surgery”. All the winners are listed below, but we send extra special congrats to our Grand Prize winner Karen Vercella in Toelle, UT who listens to KBER in Salt Lake City. She scored herself the CD, book, and the Zildjian cymbal autographed by the whole band. Here’s a look at Karen’s prize-winning entry:
I have been a true Metallica fan since the late ’80s, surprising to some people I meet as I am a short innocent looking female. I get lost in their music and admire them for their pure talent. Fifteen years ago, I worked in a bar. I had a little crush on one of the regulars who came in often. I was off work one night and was sitting in the bar. He got up to leave and I asked him where he was going. He replied, “I am going home to eat a pizza and listen to some Metallica”. Not knowing that he was having a really bad day and that was his way of letting go of some steam, I told him that sounded like a lot of fun. He invited me to come along. We have been together ever since that night.
A few weeks after that night, we were hanging out at his house when I noticed a Metallica poster rolled up in his closet. He mentioned that it was a gift and that he hadn’t gotten a chance to hang it yet. I glanced around his living room and eyed a framed picture that an ex-girlfriend had hung up. It was one of those cheesy black and white pictures of a little boy and a little girl holding hands. I immediately went over, took down the picture and ripped out the poster inside. I replaced it with his Metallica poster and hung it back up on the wall. Later he told me that was the moment that he knew he wanted to marry me, when he saw me sitting on the floor framing that poster for him.
We will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary next month. We have traveled to many different Metallica shows together, always having a great time together sharing our love for the band. Just two nights ago, we were on the rail enjoying what we love most. He’s 46 years old now and still hung out on the rail with me and rocked like a 20 year old. It was amazing! A truer fan you will never meet. We have been MetClub members for as long as I can remember. We have stayed loyal throughout the years, through losing band members, welcoming new ones, so-so album releases, amazing album releases and all that comes with being a Metallica fan…an honor we will continue I am sure until we are old and gray, still listening to Metallica and rocking away in a rocking chair instead of on the rail.

About the Book: “Metallica and Philosophy: A Crash Course in Brain Surgery” by William Irwin
“The most elucidative dissertation on Metallica ever written. And a kick-ass read to boot!!!”
Scott Ian, guitarist for Anthrax
“Like philosophy itself, Metallica’s music can scare the uninitiated, who fear their brains will hurt. This book makes both philosophy and Metallica accessible to the curious while deepening the experience of those already in the know.”
Theodore Gracyk, author of Rhythm and Noise and Listening to Popular Music
“Metallica and Philosophyis, at long last, the book which finally gives everyone’s favorite headbangers due credit for being intelligent, questioning, and even cerebral.”
Joel McIver, author of Justice For All: The Truth About Metallica
“Not just heavy metal, not just rock n’ roll, not just angst or anger or conceptual analysis, but a monster in a category of its own that shows us something dangerous about ourselves and our post-industrial culture.”
Dale Jacquette, Pennsylvania State University
“Intellectual snobs and proud low-brows alike may dismiss this as a joke- though obviously not respected academic publishers Blackwell … as an introduction to some of the major schools of thought, it is no less worthy than popular books like Sophie’s World that have also sought to bring philosophy to the mass market.”
Tommy Udo, Metal Hammer
A “provocative study” on one of metal’s greatest bands, this paperback examines the connection between Metallica and highly regarded philosophers like Aristotle and Nietzsche, and “uses themes in Metallica’s work to illuminate topics such as death, metaphysics, epistemology, the mind-body problem, morality, justice and what we owe one another.” Edited by a college professor, chapters include “Alcoholica: When Sweet Amber Becomes The Master Of Puppets,” “To Live and Die: Metallica and The Meaning Of Life” and “Boys Interrupted: The Drama Of Male Bonding In Some Kind Of Monster.”
