It’s All About Metallica This Week
Metallica Honor Cliff Burton at Small NYC Show
Metallica treated a small group of lucky fan club “Fifth Members” to a performance of their new song “Moth Into Flame” and 13 other career-spanning tracks during a special intimate concert at Webster Hall in New York City this week.
The group also paid tribute to its late bass player Cliff Burton on the 30th anniversary of his death by performing one of his signature songs, the instrumental “Orion.” When they were done, frontman James Hetfield pointed to the sky and said, “30 years … We miss you, Cliff.”
Drummer Lars Ulrich noted that it has been 33 years since the group first played New York City, and told the crowd to look for Metallica to play “outdoors across the river” (presumably New Jersey’s MetLife stadium) next summer.
Metallica’s long-awaited new studio album, Hardwired … to Self-Destruct, hits stores on November 18.
You can see a video of the band performing “Moth Into Flame” plus the set list for the show here.
Cliff Burton Was Inspired By Classic TV Show Theme
Burton’s father Ray says the death of Cliff’s brother Scott led Cliff to learn a musical instrument and a TV show theme song inspired his learning of the bass guitar.
Ray Burton says: “Cliff’s older brother Scott, who was 16 at the time, died of a brain aneurysm. Shortly after Scott died, Cliff came to his mother and me and asked if he could take up playing the bass guitar.
“The reason he liked the bass guitar was the Barney Miller show, a comedy cop show, which started off with a bass solo. And Cliff just loved that bass solo and he wanted to get the same sound that was in that show.”

New Metallica Song Inspired By Lemmy
Metallica frontman James Hetfield says that one of the tracks on the band’s new album is a tribute to Lemmy’s favorite Marshall Super Bass Head from 1976, affectionately named Murder One.
“Murder One” appears on Metallica’s 10th album, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, which is scheduled for release on November 18. The Metallica song features lyrics made up of Motörhead song titles.
Hetfield said: “Motörhead had a lot to do with Metallica sitting here right now. But just Lemmy, as kind of a father-figure, he helped us a lot.
“He was unafraid. He was a character. He was himself. He did his own thing to the last breath. No matter who you are, how could you not be inspired by that?”

Metalheads Say The Damnedest Things
“I wanted to be a wrestler. But I didn’t think I was big enough. Then I met some wrestlers and I’m like, ‘I could’ve been a wrestler.’ But it all worked out pretty good in the end.
“In high school I used to wrestle and then I saw my friend’s arm snap when he fell in a wrong hold. He had metal pins in three spots and I was like, ‘I think I’m gonna go back to my band.’
“I guess it’s better that I wasn’t… but I get about the same amount of injuries as you guys!”
~ Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig revealing he originally wanted to be a pro wrestler
