Metallica, Metallica, Metallica
Metallica dominated the metal news this week. Dig in, below.
Metallica Appearance with Lady Gaga Plagued by Microphone Glitch
Metallica’s performance with Lady Gaga at the 59th Grammy Awards on February 12 suffered from a dead microphone during the first minute of “Moth Into Flame.” James Hetfield’s microphone wasn’t working and it wasn’t until he walked over to Gaga’s microphone that viewers could hear him.
At the end of the song, a visibly angry Hetfield hurled his guitar at a road-crew member while kicking over his mic stand.
“There was a slight technical snafu, but that’s not really something you can do much about,” drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone. “You just learn to live with that side of it. It happened toAdele last year; I guess this year it was our turn.”
TMZ reported yesterday that between the run-through and the live set, a wire under the stage accidentally became unplugged by a stagehand, but the Grammys have not yet responded.
Metallica did not comment on the snafu until later during their 10-song set at the post-Grammysconcert at the Hollywood Palladium, when drummer Lars Ulrich joked that they should have sent the microphones to the Staples Center where the Grammys were being held.
Lars Ulrich Says Lady Gaga is the ‘Quintessential Fifth Member’ of Metallica
Drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that Lady Gaga is the “quintessential perfect fifth member of this band,” adding, “Her voice, her attitude, her outlook on everything is so awesome. [The performance] was so effortless and organic and she just has the spirit of hard rock and metal flowing through her veins. It comes really easy for her. There’s nothing contrived; she just has this super warm, easy energy.”
It seems that Metallica’s collaboration with Gaga is going to continue. “We already started fast-forwarding to the next chapter when we can do more of this,” he said. “It’s not one of those ’20 lawyers, strategists and managers trying to force two people from two different worlds to figure out how to spend four minutes together on a national telecast.’ Of any of these undertakings, this is about as organic and authentic as there’s ever been one. We’re just getting started.”
Metallica Confirm “WorldWired North American Tour”
Metallica have confirmed their first American tour in eight years for a North American stadium tour this summer as they hit the road in support of the latest chart topping studio album “”Hardwired…To Self Destruct.”. The tour is scheduled to get underway on May 10 in Baltimore, MD and will conclude on August 16 in Edmonton, AB.
The band said, “It was one of the worst kept secrets in the touring world and now we’re here to finally make it official… yes, the WorldWired tour will be hitting the road in North America this summer for our first extended tour of the States and Canada since 2009!
“Whew… it certainly has been way too long and we are beyond excited to be visiting all of our friends in North America. We’re also psyched to announce that after joining us in Minneapolis last year, Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat have graciously signed on to be the main support acts for the run.”
Check out Metallica’s WorldWired North American Tour dates on the HOH website.

Megadeth Wins Best Metal Performance for “Dystopia” at 59th Grammy Awards

Megadeth won their very first Grammy Award (after being nominated a dozen times) on Sunday, taking home the honor for Best Metal Performance for the title track to theirDystopia album.
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine laughed off the fact that the Grammy house band played aMetallica classic following their acceptance speech on Sunday night. Some fans noted that the house band began playing Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets” following Megadeth’s acceptance speech. Mustaine took to Twitter to address the controversy. He tweeted, “Ah, you can’t blame ’em for not being able to play Megadeth.”
Megadeth won over the other nominees: Baroness’ “Shock Me,” Gojira’s “Silvera,” Korn’s “Rotting in Vain” and Periphery’s “The Price is Wrong.”
Frontman Dave Mustaine said, “Fantastic! Only took twelve tries to get this. Last time we were here, we were talking to Kenny G, and he asked me how many times we were here and he goes, ‘Well, eleven isn’t that bad.’ I said, ‘How many times did it take you?’ And he said, Twenty-one.’ And I was, like, ‘Oh, my god. If it takes twenty-one times… I don’t know if I’ll live that long.'”
He then offered his thanks, “I want to thank Jesus Christ, I want to thank my wife, my children, all the band’s wives and kids. I want to thank our management, our label, our agent, our attorney, our crew, all of you, especially the metal community. It’s a little weird that we ended up being category 69, but somebody’s got a sense of humor.”

Bobby Blotzer on battle over Ratt name: “This Is Definitely Not Over”
As we reported last week in the ongoing Ratt name saga, the judge recently shot down an appear by drummer Bobby Blotzer in the trademark infringement case, seemingly allowing Stephen Pearcy, Juan Croucier and Warren DeMartini to tour under the Ratt name. However, Blotzerinsists the battle is far from over.
Blotzer posted the update on his Facebook page, as well as offering some snarky commentary on the recent February 11 performance (see video link above) led by the three classic-era Rattmembers under the band’s name.

Angus Young Jams AC/DC Tunes with Guns N’ Roses
As expected, Angus Young jammed AC/DC classics with Guns N’ Roses during both gigs at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia this past weekend. Axl Rose introduced Young: “We’re gonna bring out a friend of ours. Ladies and gentlemen, Angus Young!”
Angus appeared on stage wearing jeans and a t-shirt and Rose had on an AC/DC jacket. Rosejoked, “Here’s something you never see. He didn’t have his school uniform, but I’m wearing a school jacket.”
When Young returned for the second night, GNR live streamed the performance of “Whole Lotta Rosie” via their Facebook page. Angus and the band also performed “Riff Raff”.
The shows were the kick off of the Australian and New Zealand leg of Guns N’ Roses Not In This Lifetime reunion tour.
Guns N’ Roses Pulls a Spinal Tap “Hello Cleveland”
Guns N’ Roses suffered a Spinal Tap “Hello Cleveland” like moment at their concert in Melbourne, Australia when an introductory greeting called out the wrong city.
The introductory flub came courtesy of the group’s longtime guitar tech / announcer McBob who mistakenly called out “Sydney” instead of Melbourne. The restless crowd began clapping in anticipation of the band taking the stage, before being greeted by McBob’s intro. The cheers quickly turned into boos for those who caught the error.
The band took to Facebook following the show, apologizing to their fans, “Accidentally, after 30 years McBob made an error. We’re truly sorry.” Check out fan filmed footage and crown reaction here.

ODDS N’ SODS
The Headbanging Purple Bird: “Trash Dove”
The headbanging Trash Dove has been flooding Facebook, becoming one of the first major memes of 2017.
According to Know Your Meme, Trash Dove is part of a set of Facebook stickers created by Florida artist Syd Weller. The doves made their debut on Facebook on January 31, but they first went viral was Thailand, beginning with a music video on the Animals With Paws Facebookpage which has received 4.3 million views since February 7. It appeared on English-speaking Facebook on February 11.
“Pigeons are such strange birds, they have very beautiful mottled, shimmery feathers, but they waddle around and bob their heads and beg for crumbs,” Syd Weller recently explained to The Guardian. “They’re like beautiful doves, except they eat trash.”
BuzzChic guesses that Weller never visited Chicago, where they fondly called pigeons “Sky Rats”.
Metalheads Say The Damnedest Things
“Guys, I said, I think we really owe it to ourselves to kind of document ourselves the way we are now. Vivian (Campbell, one of two lead guitarists) has been in the band nearly a quarter of a century, and it’s kind of mad that the last (full concert) thing that we put out was on VHS tape!
“When you have five alpha males in a band, you have to realize who the boss is, and we quickly established that the boss is the song. The radio taught us three minute rock’n’roll. There were big guitars on “Rebel, Rebel”, “Jean Genie”, “Metal Guru” and “(Bang A Gong) Get It On”… Those big drums, big choruses, big guitars, is what taught us who we are.”
~ Frontman Joe Elliott of Def Leppard talks about the bands new live concert DVD and double CD, “And There Will Be A Next Time… Live from Detroit”
